Alayna Rasile-Digrindakis + Rachael Mayer
This fiber artist show was originally conceived upon a re-investigation of the feminist histories inherent in fiber arts; discussing process-based art as it relates to our two contemporary women fiber artists of the west: Alayna Rasile-Digrindakis and Rachael Mayer, and the fibers artists, historically, who paved the way.
Both artists come from backgrounds rooted in our western landscapes, one may even go so far as to say they are kin with the natural world around them. It doesn’t just influence their art, it is their art. The place-making natural dyes, the invitation to interface with their tactile pieces, the process of belabored weaving with delicate threads speak to a true connection to the natural world.
Exploring, manipulating and classifying our surroundings is ingrained in our species, it has informed our cultural and societal constructs in deep, formative ways. The level of our species’ impact is far more advanced and detrimental to our planet and its inhabitants than any other life form that coexists with us today. Both artists reveal, through their process, that we humans must reassess the constructs that we have relied upon to c connect across tribes, across oceans - as those constructs were created from a human-centric perspective, whereby in the hierarchy of lifeforms, we predominated and generated rules and processes that focused solely on our advancement. In actuality, these constructs exclude and harm more humans than have benefited from them.
